Samsung has now announced its Galaxy S10 series of smartphones. There are three phones in the Galaxy S10 series, the Samsung Galaxy S10+, Galaxy S10, and the Galaxy S10e. Going by the specs, features and the many colour variants the Galaxy S10e will ship in, it is a no-brainer that it straight competes with the Apple iPhone XR. Here, we will take a glance at how the latest Galaxy S10e stacks up against its first rival, the Apple iPhone XR. Do note that this is firmly a spec based comparison as we have reviewed the iPhone XR and will shortly review the Samsung Galaxy S10e.
Performance
iPhones are well-known for delivering great performance and the similar was iterated when we tested the iPhone XR throughout our review. The smartphone comes prepared with the company’s own A12 Bionic chip that is finished using a 7nm fabrication process and managed to best all Android flagships that we tested it alongside and matched the performance its older siblings, the iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max. This held accurate when we benchmarked the device on both Antutu and Geekbench.
While we are yet to review the Samsung Galaxy S10e, the leaked Geekbench scores of the phone did contact the 10,000 marks. In India, the handset will be launched running on the company’s Exynos 9820 SoC, which is manufactured using an 8nm fabrication process. While the chipset is at a small weakness here by 1nm alongside its competitor, another leaked benchmark listing from Antutu suggest that the company could have tweaked the chip to mix out performance that is on an alike level as the A12 Bionic. However, we will reserve our judgments as we are yet to test the S10 with an Exynos 9820 SoC.
Display and Design
Let’s begin off by taking a look at the display and design of the two phones. The recently announced Samsung Galaxy S10e sports an Infinity-O display design that gets rid of a notch by introducing a punch-hole in the display where the front camera is located. However, it gets a flat display, instead of the flowing Infinity display we have arrived to anticipate from a Galaxy S series handset. On the other hand, the iPhone XR’s design is like to the iPhone X/XS as the notch that houses the Face ID tech is quite prominent on the display. Those who dislike notches might akin to the Infinity-O display design appealing on the Galaxy S10e.
On paper, the display specifications of the Samsung Galaxy S10e do appear to fare enhanced. It sports a 5.8-inch Dynamic AMOLED display with a 1080 x 2280 pixel resolution. On the other hand, the iPhone XR comes ready with a 6.1-inch Liquid Retina HD LCD display with a resolution of 1792 x 828 pixels. As we mentioned in our review, the iPhone XR’s display let us losing since the company favored to increase the display size and decreased the declaration. Additionally, the fact that it costs more than the iPhone 8 Plus at launch and doesn’t feature a Full HD display is irksome.
Camera
The iPhone XR is ready with a single camera, while the Samsung Galaxy S10e gets double main shooters. The iPhone XR features a 12MP wide-angle back camera with F/1.8 aperture and on the front, it sports a 7MP sensor with F/2.2. As we supposed in our review, “The iPhone XR does take marvelous images, but the lack of a secondary camera is absolutely going to pinch, especially given that the XR is priced the equal as previous year’s iPhone 8 Plus. If you must have a secondary lens, then you have no choice but to go for the more luxurious iPhone XS.”
The Samsung Galaxy S10e sports a 12 MP main wide-angle camera on the rear that has an uneven aperture between F/1.5 and /F/2.4. On the front, it comes prepared with a 16 MP ultra wide shooter with F/2.2 aperture. The camera specs do look solid on the device and camera samples exposed off by Samsung during the launch looked spectacular, however, we will provide a verdict on how they fare when we put the handset through our camera tests.
Memory and Storage
We think that the comparison of memory among the Samsung Galaxy S10e and the iPhone XR will be a comparison between Apples and Oranges. This is because the iOS on the iPhone XR is tuned to such a level that it performs perfectly in almost all tasks, even though the phone is set with 3GB RAM. We know that Android phones tend to slow down over time but the Galaxy S10e comes in 6GB and 8GB RAM variants. This sum of memory should be sufficient for most intensive tasks. However, we will refrain from delivering any judgment based on memory until we get to review the new Samsung phone. The iPhone XR runs on iOS 12 while the Galaxy S10e runs on One UI, which is based on Android 9 Pie.
In terms of storage space, the Samsung Galaxy S10e takes the cake as its base variant gets 128GB of inside storage space, with a higher memory option of 256GB. On the other hand, the base storage on the iPhone XR is 64GB, with superior options of 128GB and 256GB. More internal storage space is forever enhanced and in this case, when you go for the base version, you get more inside storage with the Galaxy S10e and lest we forget, the phone also supports storage expansion up to 512GB via microSD card.
Pricing
As of writing this article, Samsung is yet to declare India pricing of the Samsung Galaxy S10e but in the US, it is priced at $749 (Rs 53,250 approx). Additionally, Apple is selling the base version of the iPhone XR for Rs 76,900. One can anticipate the S10e to have superior pricing that the converted cost is shown here, however, it could be lesser than the iPhone XR.
Additional Features
Both, the iPhone XR and the Samsung Galaxy S10e, feature wireless charging support. However, the Galaxy S10e gets reverse wireless charging as well, using which one can charge other wireless charging behind phones and devices. The Face ID is the only way to unlock the iPhone XR, however, the Galaxy S10e gets a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. Oh, and Samsung has resolute to let the 3.5mm audio jack live on, while Apple ditched the jack with the iPhone 7. Both the devices arrive with waterproofing, but the Galaxy S10e is more consistent in this aspect with IP68 documentation, while the iPhone XR is also IP67 certified.
